UNDERSTANDING THE SCALE

What is the spice scale? A reader's guide to heat levels in books

The spice scale is a standardized rating system for sexual and romantic content in books, ranging from 0 (completely clean) to 5 (maximum explicit heat). At Sort By Cravings, we assign spice ratings through a consistent rubric and hide unsupported ratings until they are reviewed — no guessing, no relying on genre norms, no publisher influence.

The scale exists because readers deserve to know what they're getting before they commit. A "steamy" label from a publisher could mean anything from a single kiss to graphic kink — our numbered scale removes the ambiguity. Whether you want to avoid explicit content entirely or you're specifically seeking maximum heat, the spice level tells you exactly where a book falls.

Each level has a distinct name and clear boundaries:

  • ❄️ Clean (0/5) — No romantic or sexual content whatsoever
  • 🌶️ Sweet (1/5) — Fade-to-black, closed-door, physical awareness without detail
  • 🌶️🌶️ Warm (2/5) — Brief on-page intimacy, emotionally focused
  • 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Moderate (3/5) — Open-door, detailed, steamy but balanced with plot
  • 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spicy (4/5) — Frequent, graphic, explicitly detailed scenes
  • 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Scorching (5/5) — Maximum heat, central to the story, may include kink

A spice 3 in dark romance means the same as a spice 3 in cozy fantasy. We rate what's on the page, not what the genre typically delivers.

READING GUIDE

How to use spice ratings to find your next read

Spice ratings are one of three signals we use to match you with your next book. Here's how to use them effectively:

1. Know your comfort zone

If you've read a book you loved and know its spice level, start there. Our level pages let you browse every book at that heat level, sorted by genre and mood. If you're not sure, our quiz will figure it out for you.

2. Combine with mood and tropes

Spice level tells you how much heat is on the page, but not what kind of story surrounds it. A spice 4 enemies-to-lovers reads very differently from a spice 4 friends-to-lovers. Use our mood pages and trope pages alongside spice to find books that match on every dimension.

3. Use spice ratings for book clubs and recommendations

When recommending books to others, spice level is the single most useful data point. It prevents the "I did NOT expect that scene" reaction and ensures everyone in your book club is comfortable with the content level. Send them directly to the spice level page that matches their preference.

4. Explore adjacent levels

If you're a spice 2 reader who's curious about stepping up, each level page includes a comparison section showing exactly what changes between levels. You can test your boundaries with our "beginners" recommendations at the next level up.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Spice level books: FAQ

What does "spice level" mean in books?

Spice level is a reader-created rating system that measures the amount and explicitness of sexual or romantic content in a book. It typically ranges from 0 (no romantic content) to 5 (maximum explicit heat). At Sort By Cravings, we assign spice levels through a standardized rubric and hide unsupported ratings until they are reviewed, so a rating of 3 means the same thing regardless of genre.

Who decides the spice ratings on Sort By Cravings?

Every spice rating is determined by the Sort By Cravings editorial team after a Rubric Review of each book. We use a consistent rubric that evaluates frequency, explicitness, and detail of intimate scenes. We do not accept publisher payments for ratings or placement — every rating is earned independently.

Can a book's spice level change between books in a series?

Absolutely. Many series escalate heat levels as the characters' relationship develops. A series might start at spice 1 and reach spice 4 by the final book. We rate each book individually, so you can track the heat progression across a series on our reading order pages.

How is your spice scale different from other rating systems?

Most spice ratings online are crowdsourced or assigned by publishers with varying standards. Our system is editorially controlled — one team, one rubric, applied consistently across all 2304+ books. A spice 3 dark romance and a spice 3 cozy fantasy have the same level of explicit content on the page. Genre expectations don't inflate or deflate our ratings.
